scarpetta

a group of italian men taught us the term “scarpetta”
scarpetta literally translates to ‘little shoe’. however colloquially the word is used when you take a piece of bread and dip it in the sauce that remains on your plate once you’ve finished your meal.
“fare la scarpetta”
according to these men, the act isn’t considered to be that polite yet nearly everyone in Italy does it. i prefer to think of myself as an expert scarpettara.
